John Mayall — Moving On

So it happens that I’m touching on this one before I leave the ‘M’ section of my collection, but in fact this begins a long series of “catch-up” entries – the records that I’ve bought in recent months that fall earlier in the alphabet.

Here we have another John Mayall album, this one from 1972. Gruppo Sportivo once wrily sang, “When Mayall sings the blues, he goes back to its roots” – well, here Mayall branches into jazz fusion, which is very much not my jam – except this is just brilliant. An amazing listen, this live album was a followup to a similar live release from earlier the same year that was called “Jazz Blues Fusion.” Apparently this venture into jazz began with an album Mayall produced for Albert King. It’s a nice foray. I have the album following this, “The Latest Edition,” which returned to his blues roots.

After decades of ignoring Mayall’s output, I just bought this back in May at Forever Changes, and it confirmed my new philosophy: see Mayall, buy Mayall. I haven’t been disappointed yet.
