Ohio Players – Angel

Ohio Players Angel front cover – less salacious than previous covers, and just plain beautiful.

I’ve already written about how I couldn’t have brought any Ohio Players records home when I was in my teens (see “Fire”)– the graphic and frankly exploitive covers of sexualized women would not have flown. The cover of “Angel” is really just beautiful – but still, not something I could have brought home. So this is another one that I just bought, as I have dramatically expanded my funk collection in the past few years. This 1977 record made the top 50 (top 10 for Soul), but its singles didn’t really register and when I bought it a couple of months ago, none of the songs sounded familiar to me. Maybe it was because they were very much sticking to their sound from the past several albums, while in 1977 the world was heavily moving on to disco.

Still, this is a solid Ohio Players album.
