The Loons — Inside Out Your Mind
When I first moved to the great little city of Phoenixville, and started going into the little record shop down on the main drag, I didn’t know that I was going to reignite my vinyl craziness. I just thought I’d buy a record or two now and then. I truly didn’t know myself.
So on an early browse of Deep Groove Records, this little number caught my eye. I had no idea what was going on inside it, had never heard of the band, had no clue about the sound. But often you can judge a record by its cover, and this one looked to be right up my alley. Released in 2015, so damn near new when I bought it, the cover photo and title promised something either garage or psych, possibly both, and I was down for it.
And that’s pretty much what it is. They cite Love, The Pretty Things and The Yardbirds as their influences, and that all comes through. Very enjoyable record . . . not one that compels me to play it very often, but perfectly good. And it’s a reminder that sometimes you just need to take a chance. If nothing else, I have a record in my collection none of my friends have heard of, so there’s something to break out and listen to.
The band appears to still be around (at least they were still doing shows in 2019) – they fall into that interesting category of bands you’ve never heard of that manage to tour internationally. There are some music genres that support that, particularly in Europe.
Though pretty new, my copy was in fact used. Inside it I even found the Amazon receipt from the original owner, who apparently ordered it and got rid of it pretty much right away. I paid less than he did. 😉
